Bathroom renovations are like a piece of string – how long is it and how far can you go?
Naturally this all depends on a client’s budget, time and resources but there is no doubt that the traditional ‘water closet’ is one of the priority rooms for most people to nail down and get right when either purchasing a home or renovating.
Bathrooms are considered one of the hero rooms in any residence with kitchens being the other. If a house or unit doesn’t have a modern, clean and workable bathroom or kitchen then it can seriously devalue the property.
A bathroom is a private, intimate space and which must contain a luxurious and comfortable feel. The design of your bathroom can be dictated by an existing layout or if you are building a new bathroom from scratch, your imagination needn’t be restricted by existing walls, facilities and an outdated floor plan.

See our checklist of ideas and considerations before you decide to dive into your bathroom renovation:
BUDGET
How much does a bathroom renovation cost? This is totally up to the budget of the client and is also dictated by your expectations. Remember, renovating a bathroom is an investment so you don’t want to go cheap. By establishing a budget you can then work around that sum to create a lovely, workable bathroom that won’t need updating in a few years.
BATHROOM COLOURS
Choosing the correct colour palette can be make-or-break when it comes to how your bathroom renovation will look. The most popular ceiling colour is white because it allows the room to look open, far larger than the space actually is. If you choose a darker colour for the ceiling, just keep in mind that your bathroom will look smaller. A similar philosophy can be employed when choosing colours for your walls, vanity, toilet and shower.
LIGHTING
Allowing natural light to flow into your bathroom is something we definitely recommend. Consider things like large windows and incorporate them into your design. Skylights are another way of bringing natural light into your bathroom with the added benefit being that they can also assist with ventilation.
LUXURY
Who doesn’t want to have luxurious finishes in their bathroom? The addition of a few luxurious pieces can give your bathroom a totally different look and feel. Ceiling design, lighting, wood or woodgrain finishes, glass, mirrors and much more all have attributes which make your bathroom pop!
FREESTANDING PIECES
At JY Renovations we suggest, if possible, that at least one freestanding item be a showpiece for your bathroom. This may be a decorative feature or may serve a practical use such as a freestanding bath or vanity.
MIRRORS
The installation of large mirrors in your bathroom can help make your space look open. One common problem you get in bathrooms is mirrors misting up. The solution here is the installation of heat pads behind your mirrors.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS
Some other things to consider prior to starting a bathroom renovation are:
These are all the rage and when well designed can a tremendous amount of residual value to your home
You can never have enough storage so don’t forget to allow for cabinets, vanities and shelving when planning
PRE-EXISTING ISSUES
Bathroom renovations can tend to go over budget and one of the big reasons why are pre-existing issues. These are problems that are hidden behind walls, underneath tiles and behind facilities. More often than not these problems aren’t visible to the eye until a wall is ripped out or a floor is removed. Always allow for extra money in your budget for this.
Bathroom renovations can be a costly time and financial commitment, however, it can be a very rewarding experience emotionally once it is complete. A beautiful bathroom with a fresh vibe, new floor tiles, aesthetically-pleasing finishes and modern facilities also adds plenty of value to your home.
Don’t risk your bathroom renovation with someone that isn’t experienced.
